Baby Give Me a Sign

Have I mentioned that my 1 year old can tell me when he's thirsty? He tells me though not with words, but with sign language. That's right ... my son will give me the sign for milk when he is thirsty. One of the latest trends with parenting is teaching children sign langauge. My husband and I started with our son when he was was 9 months old. It took some patience and consistency with showing him signs on a regular basis, and now it's starting to pay off!

A great product to get you started with signing is the Signing Times DVD and CD collection. The DVD's use both babies and toddlers signing, animation, great music, and an adult model to teach you and your child various signs. The Signing Time DVD set Vol 1 -3 and a bonus CD can be found at a discounted price of $54.95 [regular price $64.99] at Precious Personalities. Little Earthquakes

A great read for all mommies is Little Earthquakes by Jennifer Weiner. Little Earthquakes tells of the lives of four women who have nothing in common but manage to form strong bonds over pregnancy and motherhood.

Becky, an overweight but talented chef who becomes the main focus of the story delivers the author's views on pregnancy, motherhood & the ups and downs that all these women expereience as their connection grows deeper. From Becky's first meeting with Ayinde, a lonely beautiful woman who is also the wife of an NBA star and who goes into labor after a pre-natal yoga class, to the exuberant Kelly (who assists Becky and Ayinde during yoga), Jennifer Weiner details the complexities of female friendships with humor and grace. The fourth woman in this novel is Lia who joins the trio in friendship as she returns to Philadelphia after a tragedy and finds friendship with this unlikely group of women.

If you loved Good in Bed and In Her Shoes you'll adore Little Earthquakes. Little Earthquakes is now available in both hardcover and paperback print and can be found on Amazon's website for a discounted price. Or check your local library for a copy and borrow it for free!

Sophie the Giraffe

At a party a couple months ago my son got ahold of a rubber giraffe toy. Well unfortunately the toy didn't belong to him, and the owner wanted it back. Needless to say my son was not happy. I've been trying to find that rubber giraffe ever since, and I've finally found it! She is Sophie the Giraffe.

Sophie the Giraffe was born in 1961 and is the most popular toy in France. Sophie is the ideal toy for little hands as it's soft and easy to grasp. This is a great teething toy as Sophie is made out of natural rubber and non-toxic paint. The bumps on her head provide a soothing feeling to teething babies. Sophie also makes a happy sound when squeezed.

Sophie can be found at The Elegant Child's website for $20.00. The Elegant Child will also donate a portion of the proceeds from each Sophie sale to Light the Night. Light the Night is an organization dedicated to finding a cure for leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's diesease, and myloma and to improve the quality of life for those patients and their families.

Father's Day

Father's Day is fast approaching. If you can find time, this homemade gift is adorable! If baby's too young to participate, you can always coat their hands with non-toxic finger paints and let them 'draw' their own version or paint the drawings that mom made. This 'You and Me' book will be a liftetime keepsake, and best of all...it's free! Talk about thrifty.

The Land of Nod

My son sure scored the jackpot with his birthday gifts. One of my favorite gifts that he received is the Nod Alphabet Blocks by a company called The Land of Nod. Each block is hand-painted and embossed. The blocks come designed with letters, numbers, words, and illustrations. The blocks also come with a canvas bag for easy storage. This set goes for $39.00.

The Land of Nod is a hip upscale chldren's furnishing store that had been a catalog-only business until they became partners with Crate & Barrel a few years ago. The Land of Nod also carries an original selection of toys for kids, books, music, and very adorable baby gifts. What tempts me the most is the Personalized Alphabet Artwork "Hello My Name is ... ". It is a canvas print that can be customized to have your child's name. There is a boys and girls palette. This print would make a great baby shower or birthday gift.

The Land of Nod also has a registry program that you can create/edit online and is also accessible in one of their local stores. This registry can not only be used for a new arrival but for your child's birthday list as well. Please check out The Land of Nod's website www.landofnod.com or one of their retail locations to view their terrific products. Be sure that you don't miss the Nods & Ends Outlet for items marked up to 80% off!

Organic, Baby!

The more organic children's items I can get my hands on, the better. Sure I might put a few toxins into my own body, but I try to use only pure and organic on and into my kids. Rawganique is a company based in British Columbia, and they carry a million organic items. From bedding to kitchen to shoes, they carry the purest of the pure. Check out these organic slip-on shoes for kiddies and this cookbook, all eco-books for that matter, is 30% off! Just a few of the many finds at Rawganique. Very exciting for a 'crunchy' mom like myself! $5 all-you-can-order shipping!

The Road Trip Accessory for Kids

Memorial Day weekend is upon us and that means road trip for many families across the country. I could only imagine what it would be like to be on a road trip with a child or children who are bored and restless. Let's just say that it doesn't sound like much fun. With that in mind I'd like to introduce Books-in-a-Cup by a local Bay Area company Klutz. The cups contain four unique 40-page activity books, a pencil with an eraser and a cool critter pencil top, and two sheets of stickers. The cup fits in snugly in a cup holder and strives to provide a whole lot of backseat fun. The cups come in 2 different colors/themes, lime with a dog pencil topper and orange with a bug pencil topper. I saw these at Target and wished that there was something like this for my 1 year old son. The Books-in-a-Cup are for children 8 years and older. This fabulous prodcut can be purchased on Target's website, at a local Target store, or on Klutz's website for $9.95.

Please also visit Klutz, the maker of Books-in-a-Cup at www.klutz.com for more great products for kids. Klutz offers free shipping for orders over $50.00.

Let's Go Coastal with Ocean's Edge at the Monterey Bay Aquarium June 4 -5, 2005

June is just around the corner and that means another trip to the Monterey Bay Aquarium. The Monterey Bay Aquarium is approximately 125 miles south of San Francisco and would make a great day trip for you and your family. The aquarium has recently completed dramatic new exhibits in the original aquarium galleries. To celebrate, the Monterey Bay Aquarium is holding an Ocean's Edge celebration from June 4 -5. The aquarium will be celebrating with a beach party theme. There will be live music, giveaways, kids crafts, and behind the scenes tours.

The transformed "Ocean's Edge: Coastal Habitats of Monterey Bay" galleries include a walk-through crash tunnel [experience what it would look like to be under the wave], a gallery devoted to the giant octopus, larger touch pools, and new hands on activities like the Tide Pool Olympics and Real Cost Cafe.

During this time of year it can get pretty busy. The best times to avoid the crowds is to come after 2pm (closing time is 6pm) and/or visiting on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursdays.

The first 100 children (ages 3 - 12) through the main entrance on June 4 -5 will receive a FREE octopus plush toy. Please visit their website www.mbayaq.org/ for more information.

Flip Flop Kit

Growing up in Hawaii all I ever wore were slippers, otherwise known as flip flops. When I moved to the San Francisco Bay Area a little over 10 years ago, I had to bring a couple of pairs back with me from Hawaii every year. I couldn't find any stores that sold flip flops. These days it's a different story. Flip flops are everywhere. Since I have a little boy I don't come across too many things for girls, but I happen to come across a terrific item for girls. It's called the Flip Flop Fun Kit. The kit includes a pair of black flip flops, colored 3D paints, waterproof glue, sequins, and acryllic jewels. This creative idea is brought to you by Flip Flop Trunk Show. Their webiste is www.flipfloptrunkshow.com.

The Flip Flop Fun Kit also comes in sizes for teens and adults. It's a great activity for birthday or slumber parties and fun for mother and daughter. The kits are also reasonably priced at $16 for the kids kit and $18 for teens/adults.

Mom & Baby Yoga

If you haven't already heard of the latest in yoga wear, I would like to introduce you to Lululemon.
This Vancouver-based yoga inspired apparel company has become all the rage across Canada and is now available in the U.S. Vancouver's boardwalks, yoga centers and trendy neighborhoods are spilling over with the hippest moms, wearing Lululemon's cropped yoga pants. They have become a staple in every hip mom's wardrobe...of course with the Bugaboo and Petunia Picklebottom diaper bags as simple accessories!

Sun Stickers

I ran across these little stickers that change colors when its time to reapply sunscreen. I'm paranoid about getting MSP sunburnt so I think its a great idea if they work. I'm tempted to make my husband use them too because he is such a baby about not putting on sunscreen properly and he ALWAYS gets burnt!

Why Cut It When You Can Chop It

My son has started eating table foods for a couple of months now. He's pretty much boycotted jarred food and only wants to eat what my husband and I eat. Since most table food does not come in little bite size pieces, my husband and I work as a team to get the food cut up ... fast. As some of you mommies may know using a fork and knife to cut chicken into 1/4 inch pieces takes some time and it doesn't help when you have a screaming baby reminding you to hurry. Enter the Twist and Chop from Swiss company Kuhn Rikon.

This compact chopper measures only 4 1/4 inches X 2 3/4 inches. Small enough to fit in my diaper bag! Which is so handy when we eat out. It's easy to use as well. With a few twists of your wrist and this chopper will get those apples, chicken, ... anything into bite size pieces for your litle one. The Twist and Chop comes apart easily and is dishwasher safe. You can get this handy gadget at Amazon for only $17.95.

Stroller Fever

So apparently your stroller is now your status symbol. I guess it won't be long before they come with hood ornaments. Just when it was becoming "okay" to drive a Hyundai, Mercedes is back and driving right up your A$$. So to speak in the world of baby couture.

Another baby blog touted the Bugaboo Frog ( at $800) as an "affordable alternative to the Silver Cross Pram"( retails for $2,000).... ok yes, I suppose that is a price break, but COME ON. Their blog, their choice- my blog my opinion:)

So anyway, Yes, while the bugaboo's are lovely and the Mercedes of Strollers if the Silver Cross Pram is the Bentley, I hereby declare just to ease your mind that it is okay to spend less than $800 on a stroller. I don't care where you live or who your neighboors are.

That being said I wanted to share with you the newest affiliate link from BabyStyle. If you click on this link and buy ThriftyMama will receive a small commission to support the board ( i feel it important to tell you that this is not editorial but advertising as we like to stick to true editorial roots) but bottom line is they have a great selection of both $100 strollers and $800 strollers. The choice is yours but atleast you get a coupon out of it.

Until June 19th save $20 off orders over $125. Please use coupon code LINK125 at checkout.

BabyStyle also has a great "club" for frequent Mama buyers. I find their selection to be nice and un-pretentious. They have something for everyone.

Confessed Janie & Jack Addict

I have to admit it ... I visit my local Janie & Jack store at least once a week. Enough so that the salespeople recognize me! I know what you're thinking, but I can't help it. It's my addiction ... Janie and Jack! It doesn't help that my son's name is Jack as well. Though it makes having this obsession all the more reasonable, well, at least in my eyes.

Imagine my delight when walking into my local Janie and Jack store and finding that they have marked down some of their clothing lines to up to 50%! My favorite boys line, Out West, has darling tees priced as low as $9.99. My favorite is this red tee with the words "Cowboy Kid" embroidered. Some of their tees, including this one, has felt and plaid appliques, screen-printing, and wonderful chain-stitching making it oh so worth the bargain price of $9.99!

This sale comes in perfect time for summer. Check their website or your local Janie and Jack store. Don't blame me if you become another Janie and Jack addicted mom!

Baby Lego

I never gave much thought to buying Lego toys for my baby until I found their baby/toddler collection. What a great buy! My son loves his Lego toys. These toys are very colorful and easy to pick up. Some parts rattle or make noises and they are all interchangable. My son's favorite is the Pull Along Duck and Duckling. The Duckling is a rattle and the Pull Along Duck "quacks" when you pull him along.

The best part about these toys is that they are so inexpensive. Their products run as low as $3.95! You can find these lovely toys on their website or at one of their local stores.

Slippery suckers

My kids prefer the shower to the bath-even when they were tiny babies. But, shower or bath, there couldn't be anything more slippery than a wet baby! To top it off, you then have to figure out how to wrap them up in a towel without dropping either the baby or the towel. Well, I found these brilliant towels that come with ties that you fasten around your neck, freeing up your hands for baby! No more towel under the chin, blindly folding your slippery sucker into a tiny envelope. BABY WRAPPERS are 2-ply and come in great patterns. The set of 2 are 5% off and 3 are 10% off!

Aloha Baby

Summer is finally coming to Scandinavia as well, or at least, we hope it's finally here! And what is more summer than beaches, surfing and everything Tiki? I am a huge Tiki-fan, so you can imagine how happy I got when I found this bib! Sour Puss got a wide selection of cool baby wear, and of course something for the hip mamas and the rockin' daddies as well. Here you can find everything from pink feeding sets decorated with skulls, Ramones-tees, and my favorite: the Tiki-bib. Both Baby B and his mama are going to look fab this summer!

The Lila Guide

A great majority of the time I buy products and services for my son based on reviews from other parents. In addition to taking in the wonderful posts from my fellow mommies here at The Daily Stroll, I've also turned to The Lila Guide.

The Lila Guide provides hundreds of parent reviews on baby-friendly stores, parks, restaurants, and activities in your local metro area. The Lila Guide was first published for parents in the San Francisco Bay Area, but now there are guides for other metro areas. These metro areas include Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Miami, New York City, San Diego, Seattle, Washington D.C., and many more. I found this book to be a valuable source of information, especially for new mommies.

They have also come out with the The Lila Guide: Baby Gear Buyer's Guide, 2005.

A fabulous offer you don't want to miss is that they are currently offering a free Lila Guide if you submit 10 or more reviews on their website! Check it out!

Snack-Trap, A Mom's Best Friend

It's snack time!

If your child is like my 1 year old then you know all about spills. That's why Snack-Trap is one of my favorite child products. It's a kid-friendly feeding product that allows little hands to feed themselves without making a mess or wasting those precious snacks. The soft plastic lid has slits that allow the lid to "open" when your child sticks his hand inside. Then the lid "closes" when he removes his hand. What's also great about the lid is when a child drops the Snack-Trap the snacks don't spill due to the creative design. I myself have about five of these in different colors and designs. My son started using these snack-traps a couple of months ago and quickly got the hang of it. Now when he sees one he gets so excited because he knows his snacks are in there.

The Snack-Trap webiste www.snacktrap.com is offering $.01, that's right 1 cent, shipping when purchasing 3 or more items within the continental US.

ThriftyMama on MSN.com

So nothing against blogger but I started a Blog at MSN.com too. It will probably be mostly the same stuff but they have a nice layout and its fun and FREE.

So thrifty am I. - now I am starting to sound like Yoda.

polite and helpful comments are welcome at MSN.com Blog as well!

Afraid of the bath!

We have had a difficult couple of weeks as Joe decided he was afraid of the bath. And I mean really afraid!

I finally did an online search and found a whole slew of mamas with 18-20 month-olds going through the same scenario. My favorite proposed solution was to use bubble bath, but Joe has really sensitive skin so we haven't been able to use anything in the bath but Aveeno. Out of desperation last night we used a little Mr. Bubble in the bath, and voila! Joe was as happy as a fish in water. (:

I did a little research and found out that California Baby makes a bubble bath for super sensitive skin, as well as a whole collection of aromatherapy bubble bath. It even comes with a bubble-blowing wand.

Smell Baby Fresh

Raise your hand if you love the way your baby smells. I am always taking a big whiff of his lovely baby scent. Babies smell so clean and pure. With this in mind I’ve been on the lookout for a new fragrance that is light, fresh, and not heavily perfumed. While on my weekly trip browsing the Nordstrom cosmetic counters I came across the Philosophy brand. I was drawn to their Baby Grace line. At first I thought it was products for babies but I was wrong. It is a line of products that come infused with a pleasing, calming scent … like a baby … hence the name, Baby Grace. The Baby Grace line includes a perfume spray, shower gel, shampoo, etc … but I am partial to the body lotion. The body lotion is infused with that fresh sweet scent, and at the same time I can moisturize my dry hands from constant hand washing. One side note is that I do wish they would come out with a travel size option for the body lotion so that I can carry it in my diaper bag. The current 16 oz size adds too much weight to my already overstuffed diaper bag. The 16 oz Baby Grace body lotion is $34.00 and can be found on their website or at your local Nordstroms store.

San Francisco Bay Area Resale Event for Children of All Ages

Sellers will offer thousands of resale items at incredible prices. These items include brand name clothing, toys, furniture, accessories, books, shoes, maternity and nursing items, and so much more! This event showcases products for babies, kids, and moms, at affordable prices. The best part of this is that admission is free! Please visit their website for times and directions.

Gymboree is currently offering their summer line for boys and girls at up to 40% off in savings. Blanket Barrier

We've strolled down to the park several times recently and were so disappointed to get there and discover all the benches taken and nowhere to sit and enjoy the sunny spring weather. I'm not one to get down in the grass and dirt so I ordered this blanket from Babystlye.com. Its water resistant so you can put it down on the damp ground and still stay dry and clean! I think it will be great at the beach too! I love all the patterns. Last year I got the Babystyle fresh stripes diaper bag as a free gift and I'm going to use it as a beach bag so everything will match!

Bath time for Mama

So the hubby is out (geeking out at the Star Wars Premiere- midnight showing-big dork), the baby is in bed.... what's a ThriftyChick to do? Take a bath! You bet.

Taking a bath may not sound like a big deal to you but you Thrifty Mama's out there understand. I was dying to try this Bath Bon Bon sent to me for review from a new beauty company called Spoiled Rotten Bath and Body and I was finally able to. I drew a hot bath, I even took the time to take some medical tape and tape over the overflow spout so that my bath would fill up as high as it would go! Yes, this is serious business- this is how you review a bath bon bon. I settled in and slid around while the bon bon fizzled away and I was left with a great scent of strawberries and cream. I read my book until my toes got pruny and it was time to get out. All in all it was a lovely time.

Get your goods at www.spoiledrottenbathandbody.com Free Shipping on $50+!!!

We love the Bath Bon Bon- Strawberries and Cream and I feel like a dead sea salt scrub is in my future.....- its only $12!!!

Got Bed Bugs?

You know I'm all about natural. These little Thermotherapeutic BED BUGS come in several vibrant fleecy colours. They contain natural grains and cinnamon that heat up in the microwave just enough to provide soothing comfort to little tummies. I am guilty of warming up my bed with one in winter! They also come in big bug sizes for mom's pregnancy discomforts and dad's aching neck. In the warmer months, they work well cold to soothe those buggin' sunburns. Great gift, thrifty price!
