DVD FOR DAD

Father's Day is right around the corner and for the man who has everything it's always a challenge. I suggest the Insignia 10.2" Portable DVD player at Best Buy. Ruby and I received this for review and I have to say it works out great. It would work out great for Dad, and for the entire family. If you have been wanting one you can always give to your husband/boyfriend/partner for Dad's day and use it for the whole family! Or to watch last season of Desperate Housewives in your bed if you want.... I am just saying...

It actually works out great for Ruby and I while I work. If I need to get something done she can sit next to me at my desk and I plug this in, throw in the Laurie Berkner DVD and we are all set! She thinks it's her laptop.

Pack and Play Away

I am longing for this travel cot from Phil and Ted. Just back from a little summer vacation- I've decided that I can't stand the pack and play that I got when MSP was born. I guess it serves its purpose, but it is so ugly and came with all these contraptions that I've barely used and won't even fit back in the carrying case- especially that cheesy teddy bear mobile. Ugh. And it weighs about a million pounds and takes up too much room in the car. I love that this one is so cool looking and weighs only 6 pounds in its little carrying case. And did I mention the self-inflating Thermarest mattress? This is one for the gearhead dads out there. Now there's an idea. These are the cutest things ever. My favorite thing about them, besides how adorable they are, is that they move backwards, forwards, and sideways and round and round. Ruby Loves The Crocs

MamaTiff posted a few weeks ago about how popular Crocs have become for kids. Ironically my Grandmother and Uncle just gave Ruby a pair from my uncles store in Bolton Landing, NY Happy Jacks.

He carries them and this season is carrying the kids sizes. My grandmother has worn hers for a couple years now and loves them, she has red and so does Ruby now. They got Ruby a size 8 but she is a 6.5, this did not stop her from wearing them all of yesterday and she would not take them off. They are SO cute. There she is above. After we stopped at Grammy's for Mother's Day we went to my assistant Kate's senior project art exhibit at Union College where the little miss liked to hang out in the corner.

My husband and I spent a long weekend in NYC last weekend. Very fun. One thing I now know for sure is that EVERYBODY in New York has a Bugaboo. And the only people that don't have them are pushing double Mt. Buggies. Since I am one of only about 4 in my hometown, I learned about something new from all these Bugaboos! The Valco cup holder. After trying several cup holders that didn't work a while back, I gave up. Don't ask me how I've made it the last seventeen months without a cup holder, but I am ordering one of these asap.

Nanny McPhee on DVD- TOMORROW

If you have been longing for a movie that you can acutally watch with your kids and not go insane, this is it. Nanny McPhee!

Out on DVD for all tomorrow May 9th, I got to see this in early release this weekend from the comfort of my own sofa with my husband and darling Ruby. She was HOOKED for the first hour anyway but that is pretty good for a 22 month old- for a 3,4,6, 40 year old it will last the entire time.

The colors are great, story is thoughtful, and it's like Marry Poppins but high on whimisical drugs. That is the best way I can describe it. If there were drugs that made you hallucinate and see pink and green mad hatter cakes, yellow dipped sheep, and nannies with warts that disappear before your eyes this would be it.

It is almost impossible to wear heals while toting around a baby or toddler. I remember my first lunch outing with MSP. I got all dolled up and put on my favorite heels and almost killed both of us trying to carry her in that infant carrier. Thank god for the valet. However, hard as it is, I could benefit from a little leg lengthening and height. Helps to hide the 10 extra pounds of baby weight that I still have a year and 1/2 later. And some of my jeans just have to be worn with heels. I'm sure many of you share my dilemma. Here's the solution! Kork-ease platform wedges. They are the shoe of the season. Back from the 70's, they are supposed to be really comfortable too. When does that ever happen- stylish and comfortable? Better run out and get yours if you can find them! Have you seen this new bouncy from Graco? Love it. Where was this when I was pregnant and accumulating all my baby gear? In the ever-so-trendy chocolate brown and blue combo, it's much better than the aqua aquarium monstrosity that I'm stuck with for future kids. I mean, most people don't go out get all new baby stuff for the second kid, right? Except maybe Gwyneth- I saw that Apple has upgraded to the Bugaboo Chameleon with pink fleece, while we are still cruising in the old Frog. Depressing. I'm not even quite ready to have another one anyway, but I just saw this and started thinking about it.

What to feed my little guy is the constant question around here. Just having entered the "I only eat fruit stage" it has become even more challenging to get him to eat food that doesn't resemble a "nana" (translation: banana). So what to feed him??? I thought I'd share with you some of our personal faves in hopes that some of you may throw some back...sort of like a food menu exchange. Greyson digs cous cous with pureed carrots and melted cheese on top, mashed sweet potatoes with applesauce, plain yogurt with minced peaches & cereal. What's your little one's craving? I'm desperate for any suggestions with chicken, fish, meat, etc...those are the most challenging so by all means respond. "Food glorious food..hot sausage with mustard"??? Well, I just might give that one a whirl!!!

I never thought that I would do it but I feel the need to simplify and have a reliable, preppy, consistent style. When I think stylish, together mom, I think Vera Bradley.

Today I started collecting "Bermuda Pink", a pattern from 2004. I got the Villager tote which has so many pockets inside -all around the sides to keep me organized it's unreal. I also got a wallet that is big enough to fit my checkbook inside, and I am so excited to start on this journey with Vera.

Next up is the duffle. I will save my money and get a duffle so I can be a super chic traveling mom.

The Lost Art of the Bib

For some reason when Ruby was a year old or so I stopped using a bib. I have no idea why. She is almost 2 and I am just realizing this. I get so mad at myself when we go out to eat or something and I have forgotten to take along a bib. This is mainly because I feel like all of the other moms are thinking to themselves that I am an idiot. At home we use one that is wipe-able and is conveniently hooked to her high chair but I am just now getting back into bib shopping and have found a cute one I like.

Let's Talk Grooming

So. Got a question for all you dads out there. And your spouses. What are you doing for your dome these days?

Everywhere I go with my child I see more and more men my age (early- to mid-30s) in the same predicament as me - balding. It's not always the same pattern, of course, but for many of us, our patches of hair are like islands on a twisting sea. Unconnected. Seemingly random. Gulfs, bays and inlets. Definitely a sad shadow of my luxurious, Andy Garcia-like locks.

My solution and, it seems, the solution of many of the other dude dads is to just shave it. Anything else looks like a comeover, a bit of dog fur glued to the top of an Easter egg. Thankfully, it's a pretty good time, fashion wise, to be bald or balding. It helps if you have great pecs and washboard abs like Mr. Jason Statham here, of course, but that's not a requirement. (Besides, I just know you dads have two hours a day to knock off a bunch of weightlifting, right?)

The question is: what are you doing to cut your hair? Ladies, little known fact, but men can talk barber-talk all day - their favorite haircuts, their favorite shops, the jokes they hear when they're in the chair, stuff like that. But as much as we love the barber shop, it doesn't make sense to spring $20 every two weeks. Same logic applies to our hair as our lawns - we ain't paying some kid to cut it. Not when we can gas up the hog and spend a couple hours outside.

That's where, for me, the home clippers come in. Yes, the dreaded do-it-yourself haircuts that can go so horribly wrong. On the plus side, it's not as easy to mess up a haircut when you're wearing it this short. But on the negative, now I find myself seeing a well-shorn head in church or on the street and wanting to ask: Hey, man, what guards are you using? I'm a number 1 on the sides, number 3 on top man, myself.

So I'd love to hear from you fellows what you're doing to cut your own hair, if that's your thing. It's come to my attention that many of you ladies do the trimming. My clippers of choice are the same, cheap Conair clippers with multiple guards that a barbershop uses. Affordable, easy to operate and easy to take care of. Of course various companies offer the Cadillac version of hair clippers. I'm content to let a Chevy shave my head. You?

I have to tell you I am getting sick of the shape of muffins.

Thank goodness for Reynolds Fun Shapes foil bake cups! I am no baker but my "just add water" muffin mix goes perfectly with these fun shaped foil cups that need no greasing and are disposable! I simply poured the batter in, lined them up on a cookie sheet and patiently waited for muffins shaped like stars and hearts and easter eggs!

I can't stop buying sippy cups. We lose them everywhere and never seem to have enough. Not to mention the ones left to rot in the back of the car- we have to toss those! That's what we call number 2 in my house. Jobbies. So, my son makes pee pee in the potty all the time but can't seem to bring himself to do the jobby. We'll be playing and all of a sudden he'll stop, get that look in his eyes, stick his butt out a little.

Me: "Are you making a jobby?"

Him: "No!" (GRUNTS)

Me: "Yes, you are."

Him: "...nnnggghhhnoI'mnotnnnggghhh...." (Fills diaper.)

I keep telling him, "Look, the potty is where you can go and sit and read for as long as you like - "

Mama: "Just like daddy does."

"...just like daddy - hey!"

But he still hasn't done it, although I think now he knows the difference between a jobby and a "toot."

We'll get there. You just can't talk about this kind of thing with non-parents, can you? How's potty training going in your house?

Brokeback Mountain on DVD April 4th

As a mom/ business owner, leaving the house for a night to see a movie is pretty much out of the question. This is the reason for my husband and I being the last people on earth to see Brokeback Mountain until last night.

Universal Studios sent us a pre-screener of the new DVD coming out on Tuesday. The movie is amazing and during the movie I was just sort of trying to follow the story and did not feel the full impact until after it was over. It's so odd but through the night and this morning I am really feeling strongly about it, and so amazed at the beauty of the relationship between Ennis (Ledger) and Jack (Gyllenhaal). It is not some "gay cowboy movie" and I am going to slap the next person who says that. I never thought of the movie this way, and ironically in the movie they have a fitting side story of hate.

It is not a movie about 2 guys kissing on screen and breaking the boundries of cinema, it is about that one true love that you have in your life, and the powerful connection that it creates which is both the most joyous thing you can experience and the most painful. We have all been there.

If you haven't been able to get to the movies and feel out of touch because everyone is talking about the movie of the Century and you haven't seen it, be patient, you will get your chance next week at the video store!

Mountain buggy's are on sale at joggingstroller.com. Words cannot express how happy we have been with ours. The Urban Single is a little on the pricey side for a three-wheel stroller, but if you walk a lot, it really is worth it. Ours goes from the park to the little Italian grocery store very easily.

Beware though, the 2006 models are already out---and one has a herringbone(!!) seat. I know that would be too much for me to resist...

Last night I FINALLY got around to watching the DVD screener of Show Me. This is after I put Ruby to bed as this is NOT a kid flick. This is a dark, twisted thriller that keeps you thinking.

I say it's Basic Instinct meets Blair Witch Project. My husband wasn't as enthralled but he is a snob about movies and music. It wasn't ground breaking but a good rental if you crave thrillers and when baby goes to bed, I love a thriller!

Guys' Infant Gear presents the Flanker, a utilitarian diaper bag with men in mind. We got a sample here at the Stroll for some manly-man diaper-dealer to try out and review. I am that man, and I am happy to report: I love this product.

First of all, why does a man need a diaper bag distinct from a unisex diaper bag or one with women in mind? I'm not sure, but I like the idea after trying out the Flanker. The diaper bags we have used in the past included our Eddie Bauer backpack and some basic, brandless totes, items that quickly became filled with clutter. In fact, they soon started doubling as my lovely wife's purse(s). This is not likely to happen with the Flanker. It's slim and functional, which keeps clutter to a minimum. As I used it I began to think this is where the "manly" concept comes into play: we dudes like things to be just what they are and nothing else. A toolbox is a toolbox. Fishing tackle goes in the tackle box. Beer is in the cooler. Toss it in the trunk and let's go.

The Flanker fulfills that creed. It has a little room for toys and other odds and ends, including a flat area for papers, PDAs or what have you (including a cell phone holder and thermal bottle holder). But for the most part it is all about the diapers.

But that's not all – the thing that really sold me on this is it's also all about the changing. The Flanker is made of a sturdy black quilted fabric and one of its sides folds out into a comfortable changing surface for baby. It's easy to use and convenient – no more spreading a towel (or your jacket) to make sure baby's bottom isn't touching your friend's carpet or bedspread! Follow the above link to see what I'm talking about. This is a diaper bag for the James Bond in us. Just unzip, unfold, wrestle baby onto it, and away you go. (No doubt Bond's Flanker is bulletproof and packs a parachute, too.)

Best of all, it's black. Ninja black. In testing out this product I wore it over my shoulder into the meanest, nastiest back road bar I could find. The burliest, hairiest, angriest, inkiest biker you ever saw approached me, spit on the floor, took his shades off, looked me in the eye and said, "Excuse me. Where did you get that ADORABLE bag?"

I have only one quibble about the Flanker. You can adjust the length of the strap but not the placement of the shoulder pad, which basically means that when slung over your shoulder it rests just under your arm instead of on my hip where I like it. The other thing is it's a bit pricey at $115. It'd make a great gift for a new dad but would probably be something you'd have to go in on with a few friends rather than spring for by yourself.

And it'd be worth it, although a new dad might not get it at first – he has not yet discovered how traveling with children resembles those Victorian expeditions with dozens of porters carrying rifles and surveying equipment. Let him go a few rounds with the Flanker, though, and I think he'll be as fond of it as I am. Mama's Got A Brand New Bag

So your kid has the super cool Patemm Pad where you just need to throw in a few diapers, wipes, coloring book and crayons ( or cocures) as Ruby calls them- fold it up and go right? Well what about mom? Where does she put her stuff? Not that she can't put it in the Patemm, but honestly sometimes kids just won't share their cool stuff with you.

A fun and funky new little bag on the market that I just received from www.myrebe.com called, "Maude" is great for the celli cell phone, some keys, an ipod, that sort of thing. I love it and look forward to bringing it with me on a trip next week where it will hold my cell, camera and cash just fine.

Lately, MSP loves to squish her fingers around and "paint" with her food on her high chair tray. I've been thinking that she might enjoy fingerpainting, but frankly, I've been putting it off because I'm not ready to deal with the mess. Vascular Birthmark Awareness Day

The Vascular Birthmark Foundation is a cause close to our hearts at the Daily Stroll. Ruby was born with a hemangioma and even though hers is not as life threatening as others, we are still concerned about whether it will go away or we will have to contemplate risky surgery.

Our pediatrician is waiting it out at the moment but each year many small children are not able to wait it out and they need very risky surgery to save their lives when the growths grow out of control and cover mouths, eyes etc.

This year the annual awareness day is May 15. Find out more information about how your company or you as an individual can help and get involved.

Podcast anyone?

Know what a podcast is? A podcast is when somebody records an audio file and shares it in a syndicated format, sort of like multiple-episode radio. Podcasts revolve around a number of topics and formats, including talk, music, information, genres, and other topics. RSS feeds let you know when the latest episodes of the podcast appear. My favorite podcasts include Coverville, a podcast of interesting song covers, and Bubblegone's World of Noise, a podcast of interesting "found" sounds.

But I've been on the lookout for kids-oriented podcasts and I'll tell you why: my son is getting a little tired of hearing the same songs and stories when we're in the car (and, frankly, I'm getting a little tired of telling them; I mean, how many times can you tell the one about the giant pizza that covered the school before it stops being interesting?). Podcasts can be downloaded or burned to disc and taken anywhere. So why not see what's out there for the little fella?

Alas, I feel the perfect podcast for me and my family has not been created. (Maybe I should create it). This one's kinda cute (love the accents), as is this one (although it's a bit regional). Anybody else into this and can offer some feedback?

Star Light, Star Bright...

I know I've been quiet with the celeb dish lately but since Greyson and I have run into Renee Zellweger 3 times now, we figured she deserved a mention! We spotted Ms. Renee twice at the Beverly Hills Starbucks and once at the BH Coffee Bean. Apparently, she is a coffee addict like us - sporting the extra large cups of java! I thought she looked beautiful - totally casual without a stitch of make-up and sporting the running shoes (my new shoe of choice since it's just not as easy to walk in 4 in. platforms with a 22 pd. weight on my side). Man is she a little itty bitty thing though...no Bridget Jones that's for sure. And she seemed as nice as she was small...no big Hollywood attitude in sight.

And my dear friend Mama Wendy gave me some more dish the other morning...Paris Hilton at the Four Seasons last weekend. Apparently, Paris looked her typical heiress self but didn't hold a candle to her Greek god of a boyfriend! Word out there is that he is way tooooo pretty. Speaking of pretty, Jake Gyllenhaal was in the parking lot of the macrobiotic lunch hot spot...M de Chaya. Supposedly, macrobiotic is all the rage in LA. If anyone knows the scoop on macrobiotic, please feel free to share...We'll be on the lookout on our strolls for the rest of the week...we should gather up some good dish with the 78th annual Academy Awards in town this Sunday!

We aren't really there yet. When I say "there" I mean the "mommy I lost my ........." stage. Ruby goes to a little school but comes home with what she left with for now.

I do anticipate the stage where I will have to label everything and there are so many great shops online making labels these days that it is so much easier and more stylish than taking a giant black marker to her adorable shoes, coats, juice cups etc.

I just received a package from www.Mabel.ca Mabel's Labels for Ruby and they are SO cute. Dishwasher safe for labeling cups, bottles etc and Unique inner shoe labels with protective clear stickers that keep kids belongings in order. Afterall wouldn't we be devestated if we one of our favorite See Kai Run shoes fell victim to those little clepto's at daycare? I would :)

I've just discovered that the Target website is now selling what looks to be a Bugaboo knock-off made by Fisher Price. I love my Bugaboo, but I have to admit that it was quite pricey and a bit of a splurge for us. It has turned out to be worth every penny, but I'd love to hear some reviews on this version. It might be a great option for those not wanting to spend the $800+ that a new Bugaboo now costs. And my main gripe about the Bugaboo, which is the basket, looks to be improved on this version. I wonder why it has taken so long for people to start copying? Let me know if you've tried it, or even seen it up close for that matter.

What we read: Charlie Parker played Be-Bop

Lately, I've spent more time than I ever thought possible in the children's room at the library downtown. I thought I'd share some of our favorites in the upcoming weeks. I'd love some new suggestions too!

My son's all time favorite book has got to be Charlie Parker Played Be-Bop, written and illustrated by Chris Raschka. Hubby and I both like to read it---the words are fun and zany and smart all at the same time. Essentially, you are reading nonsense, but the underlying rhythms of jazz add something to the nonsense that makes it make sense....and still remain nonsense. Does that make sense?

The hard-cover edition really is nice because the illustrations are big and colorful, but there is also a drool-friendly and abridged boardbook edition. I'd recommend it for ages birth to ??(retirement maybe?).

Thanks for the warm welcome, Ruby! Well, what better way to introduce myself than to tell you a little about my world...

So, one of my best friends just became a dad for the first time. We were talking about what to expect and I was giving him my toddler son's perspective on things. With my son, it's all Thomas the Tank Engine, all the time. My buddy says, "Yeah, I saw that show. The two things you hear most often are 'then there was trouble' and 'luckily, no one was hurt.' What's the deal with all those accidents on that railway, you'd think there'd be an investigation or something?"

I shared my theory of Sir Topham Hatt's political affiliations (personal friend of Winston Churchill) and the conversation moved on to Bob the Builder. I asked, "How'd you like to live in a world where you have to coerce all your work vehicles into doing your bidding?"

"Actually," said my friend, an electrician, "I think I do live in that world. At least, my truck does!"

He'll be a natural.

A while back we got a new product from Febreze to try out. We have tested it for a month or so and I have to say it smells great and keeps on giving off an aroma of clean. Meet the Febreze Noticeable.

Just incase you get bored of one scent, Febreze has designed this plug in air freshener to switch things up every couple of hours to a new scent. I put ours in our laundry room to give the effect that we are continuously doing household chores. It seems to work. Our laundry room is way down in the basement tucked in a corner and everytime I open the basement door I can smell it, scent travels far with Febreze! It's um, NOTICEable!!
